I have loved stories since I was a small child…listening to them as my mother read out loud to me, reading them on my own from beloved, dog-eared books, or more importantly, telling them myself using my own imagination, as well as costumes and props from my collection. Long before I went to see any professional plays, I was envisioning how I might tell my own stories on a stage in front of an audience. Directing gives me the opportunity to continue this passion that started in my childhood. I love spending time in a rehearsal room, with a group of actors, crew, and designers, interpreting a playwright’s words, so as to bring them to life in front of an audience. It’s always exciting.
I am often drawn to showbiz stories...tales about the lives of theatre creators. But I also enjoy telling stories about outsiders, loners, and people finding their unique voices in this crazy world. I consider it a privilege to not only share my understanding of the world with other theatre artists, but also to meld that understanding with their own in the process of bringing a play to life.
